Was the loss of Sri Lanka a deliberate attempt? (07-07-2008)

India won the match against Sri Lanka on the 3rd of July by 6 wickets. The match had been held in Karachi after Pakistan went out of the tournament. But the Pakistani ex-cricketers and commentators Waqar Younis and Rameez Raja have raised their doubts in the manner which the Lankan�s lost the game. Both the ex players had started to question the win and the crucial encounter between the two teams. As a result of this the hosts had been knocked out of the game.

But for India the situation was a grim one and they had to win the match to regain their lost glory and make it to the finals. A victory for Lanka would be giving the Pakistan team another chance to get back to the finals and try and win the series. But the Lankans, who were already in the final, had decided to go with a different game strategy. They decided to play with the bowling attack of the second string and put to rest their main bowlers, Chaminda Vaas and Ajantha Mendes.

This move came as a respite for India and gave it hope to regain their position in the match. The Lanka team had limited options to control the batting of team India. Dhoni and his team thrashed away the bowling side of the Lankan team to get the Asia Cup. But unfortunately for Lanka there were open questions from the Pakistani former players and their press. There were questions raised, that the Sri Lanka team had purposely given the match to India. Similar questions were asked during the live commentary of some of the former Pakistani players.

Rameez Raja said in his live commentary that the determination and will of teal Lanka in this mach could not be seen. He even named cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya for looking bored at the crease and throwing away his wicket. Waqar Younis had commented that he had not seen Mahela Jayawardene being proactive in the last game. The criticism even went far ahead to comment that none of the players carried on and their pick of the team in the final was not right. The comments of skipper Mahela Jayawardene before the match had been that it would be more comforting to play India in the final rather than playing Pakistan in their home town.

The Lankan captain denied that they had any motives to loose against team India. Even though it was evident that Team India had played extremely well in the match and their success was also due to the coincidental lack of bowlers in the Lankan side, the comments of Waqar and Rameez have raised a lot of doubts for the Lanka performance.
